With the development of the microelectronics and the space geodetic techniques, geographic information systems has been provided with boundless energy to develop. In recent years, the global positioning system (GPS) has been widely used, and has involved in all areas of the national economy because of its ability to provide information like position, velocity, time and so on. Embedded systems has been the most important invention following personal computer and the Internet because it possess a leading role in science and technology and a wide application prospect.However, intergrating the GPS and the recently developed SOPC (System on Programmable Chip) embedded chip and other technologies into a chip to achieve a real-time positioning system, which uses large-scale programmable FPGA device to implement the function of SOC and to complete embedded design and implementation of positioning system, is with great development prospects.The paper focuses on researching the method of implementation and design for GPS positioning system based on NiosII soft-core processor.The research of the dissertation is based on GPS positioning system with standard CPU core (Nios II/S) embedded structure,which mainly researches and designs a circuit systems based on soft-core Nios II embedded processor,and makes Peripheral components and the related IP core with SOPC_Builder according to the embedded hardware system, and then designs and developes real-time positioning and displaying system with the press-key interrupt module, Motorola M12GPS receiver module, the control command sending module and LCD display module with the help of Nios II IDE9.0 (Nios II Integrated Development Environment).Wireless positioning system uses the Nios II soft-core embedded FPGA as the key to information processing and controling which is for the GPS data and control commands,and the modules. It is with high development efficiency and reliability, compact structure, and less resource. In addition, with high reliabiliable and accurate M12 module basedused Motorola Oncore GPS collecting data, it can ensure a good observation signal even in bad weather conditions or complex traffic environment. Besides, it has adopted top-down design mode, and the design process has included the processor, including complete hardware and software co-design and verification tools which helps the designer get rid of the tedious details, and shorten the design cycle and save development costs largely.
