In 21st century, a new mode of sensor network is emerging as the rapid development oftechnology, i.e., wireless sensor network. It has been soon employed in the construction of smarthome. By merging the techniques of advance computer, wireless network and generic cabling, asmart home connects all kinds of electronic and electrical devices in house through network to manage and monitor these housing devices and environment.While smart home is developed at a high speed, its controllers generally remain computerswith low portablity and mobility. To keep pace with its rapid development, we design in thispaper a portable terminal controller for smart home. We first study some key techniques relatedwireless data transmission, embedded gateway, local touch and remote control. Then, weintroduce embedded Ethernet and Zigbee wireless techniques into the construction of a portablehand-held controller, which could control housing devices through two ways, i.e., local touchinghouse and remote access. The main contributions of this paper are listed below:1. Hardware design and infrastructure driver design for the portable terminal device, andimplement of the local touching function.2. Implement the interface of remote control and LCD touch screen for control, andgraphical user interface.3. Study Zigbee protocol stack , and implement the wireless data transmission betweenportable equipment and housing devices, and construct housing internal network.4. Study TCP/IP protocols, and develop embedded gateway, and implement the remotecontrol and inspection of housing devices by connecting them with external Ethernet through thedeveloped gateway.
