Design And Implementation Of Digital TV Electronic Program Guide And Subtitles System

Currently, digital television(DTV) are widely used because of better video quality and more useful functions. Electronic Program Guide(EPG) and subtitle are very important parts of digital television function. With the menu of electronic program guide, user can receive much more program information, such as start time, duration and detail introduction of the program. It also can be used in program selection and video on demand etc. Electronic program guide provides simple and flexible way to access digital television services. Subtitle system provides better communication between users and TV programs, including language translation, visible effects for hearing disorders etc. The subtitle of digital television is much simple and friendly.Based on the standards of digital television, the electronic program guide and subtitle standards are analyzed in this dissertation. And the design and implementation of these two sub systems are also described in detail.The main standards of digital television are MPEG-2 transport stream and digital video broadcasting standard. The coding methods and system level syntax are defined in MPEG-2 standard for standard definition and high definition digital television. The service information are extended in digital video broadcasting standard to allow users to get more selection and information.In local mode of electronic program guide, the information of electronic program guide are mainly packeted into service description table and event information table. The syntax of these tables and the rule of electronic program guide are introduced, and the design and implementation of local electronic program guide sub system are also described in detail. This sub system extracts service description table(SDT) and event information table(EIT) from MPEG-2 transport stream, organizes the service and event effectively for future use.Subtitle standard is one of the most important part of digital video broadcasting. The transmission rule and architecture of subtitle are researched, and the syntax of subtitle are described in detail. The subtitle sub system is designed and implemented with bitmap mode. This sub system extracts subtitle elementary stream from MPEG-2 transport stream, decodes it to bitmap and displays it with specified position, start time and duration etc.From the result, the electronic program guide sub system and subtitle sub system can extract and parse the electronic program guide and subtitle information correctly. Because of not related with chip and hardware, these two systems can be ported to digital television application very easily.
