Wireless mesh networks have attracted increasing attention and deployment as a high-performance and low-cost solution to last-mile broadband Internet access. Wireless Mesh Networks is a kind of distributed networks with high speed and large capacity. It is capable of self-organization and self-configuration by supporting multi-hop packet routing and forwarding. As one of its key technologies, wireless routing protocol plays a critical role in determining the performance of a wireless mesh network. This thesis is about the study and improvement of routing algorithm in WMN. Firstly, describe the basic knowledge of WMN including system structure, feature, and developments, the general research routine of WMN and several related research results of different procedures are analyzed. Afterwards, detailed explanations of some typical routing protocols such as DSDV and DSR in Wireless Ad hoc networks are put forward through analysis on their advantages and disadvantages. On the basis of analyzing the DSR routing protocol, combined with the characteristics of wireless mesh networks, a real-time sensing of current link state and dynamic traffic assignment is bought out. LBM-DSR, which is composed of node available bandwidth, buffer saturation and RTT arrived sequence, is used as routing metric in LBM-DSR. Each node calculates the cost (weight) of transmission to its next hop, and the path with minimal accumulative weight from source to destination is finally used as two preferred route and realize dynamic assignment. The simulation results show that LBM-DSR have significantly outperforms than existing routing protocol on such as packet delivery, end-to-end delay and normalized routing load, it is thus more appropriate for wireless mesh networks.
