Wireless Mesh Networks (Wireless Mesh Networks, WMN) is a kind of self-organization and self-healing multi-hop broadband wireless network, WMN has the advantages of high-speed, high capacity, easy networking, low cost, stable performance and so on, it can interconnect multiple heterogeneous wireless networks and it is the wireless version of Internet. Routing technology is one of the most important technologies in the research of WMN. Design and research wireless mesh networks routing protocol have important significance in both theory and practical application. The main content of this paper is routing protocol of the wireless Mesh network.Firstly, we modified the traditional OLSR protocol based on WMN's architecture and business characteristics, and proposed an improved routing algorithm EOLSR for wireless mesh network load balancing. This algorithm modified the original OLSR protocol's MPR set selection strategies, making the result of MPR set selection extended to a larger scale, so that the packet service can be more balanced distribution in the whole network. It improved network resource utilization, avoid node overloading and achieve load balance in the whole network. In the route maintenance, the algorithm will store the result of previous calculation as a backup in the topology table, this avoid the waste of calculation, and improve network robustness at the same time. Simulation results show that the improved algorithm has some improvements in the average end to end delay, delivery ratio and throughput compared to the original protocol. This paper also proposed a new routing metric-NLO-EED (Normalized Load-Oriented End to End Delay) based the scenarios of strict delay requirements and larger volume of business in wireless backbone network. This routing metric inherited the advantages of the ETT metric, it took into account the wireless Mesh backbone network's requirement for load balancing, and considered the node load and business type in the calculation of the metric, so this metric can more accurately reflect the current state of the wireless Mesh network, it can have some help in the improvement of Wireless Mesh Network routing protocol. The simulation results also show that the new metric can bring a certain degree of improvement in routing protocol performance.
