In recent years, with the rapid development of wireless mobile communication technology, enormous changes have happened in people’s production and life. Wireless Mesh Network(WMN) as a broadband wireless network architecture has been widely used because of its self-organizing, self-healing, high speed and easy networking, high reliability, etc.In WMN, with the increasing number of nodes and tighter network traffic, network topology is becoming more complex which decreases network performance. In this case, by using different transmission paths and nodes with sufficient bandwidth resources to transmit packets, load balancing can reduce network congestion, improve network throughput and ensure the network performance. Therefore study on WMN load balancing routing metric is very important to enhance the overall network performance.Firstly, the conception of WMN and its network architecture was summarized. This paper conducted in-depth analysis and research on load balancing of WMN and gateway node and discussed load balancing metric and the AODV protocol.Secondly, we analyzed the Interference-Load Aware routing metric(ILA), upon which we proposed Interference-Aware Load Balancing routing metric(IALB). The inter-flow interference was a result of the number and load of interfering neighbor nodes and the distance between neighbor node and the disturbed node.(The average queue length at node was considered as load). For Elimination of link asymmetry, we improved expected transmission time. It avoids heavy interference area, and balances network traffic to avoid congestion, so that load balancing can be achieved in WMN nodes.Thirdly, we developed IALB routing metric with multiple gateways condition. Based on the effect of multi-gateway load on network performance, we proposed Interference-Aware Load Balance Multi-Gateway routing metric(ILBMG). Node classification and autoregressive smoothing mechanism was used to calculate gateway load to indicate gateway node available capacity. It marks a distinction between Internet services and client business, and describes communication link interference intensity, thus balancing the traffic in multi-gateway wireless mesh networks in interference environments. Finally, as for simulation, the paper build the NS2 simulation platform. Based on Ramon model we design the NS2 module with multi-channel multi-interface. Then based on heterogeneous network we complete the design of gateway node, including intercommunication with Internet and WMN internal nodes. We simulate the network performance of IALB and ILBMG routing metrics in fixed number of data flows condition with different delivery rates in grid topology. Also, we simulate the network performance of IALB and ILBMG in the random topology scenario with different delivery rates and number of data flows. From the analysis of simulation result with IALB and ILBMG routing metric, the overall network throughput have a promotion and heavy interference area can be avoided. The average end to end delay and packet loss rate decrease. With IALB and ILBMG routing metric, overall network performance have a enhancement, and the load balance is achieved. Moreover, ILBMG routing metric have an excellent performance with network capacity, utilization of network resources and load balancing of gateway nodes in multi-gateway environment.
