With the rapid development of Internet and network application technology, network multimedia application became an important application of Internet. Multimedia information includes text, graphics, images, audio, video and so on. Network multimedia application requires many intelligentized terminals because of some important features of real-time multimedia information,such as high data rate.small delay and real-time interaction. Most of the existing intelligentized terminals are developed by C/S structure. These terminals are difficult to deploy and cross the different platforms. It also takes the high cost for management and maintenance. A network video play system with B/S structure is designed and implemented. The client can only use the browser to watch the real-time network video.Three design schemes are proposed based on the requirements of the system. By comparing the advantages and disadvantages of those three schemes, the network video play system is designed and implemented based on the open-source VLC project using ActiveX control technology, streaming media technology, and MPEG-4 video technology. VLC project is an open source project about streaming media server and player. It can provide a good solution for network video player based on browser because the secondary development of VLC is quite easy.Four problems are sovled in the develop process. The first one is extending snapshot by revising VLC source code and adding interface based on ActiveX control technology. The second one is extending recording by revising Live555 source code and developing a client receiving program based on MPEG-4 video technology. The third one is providing secure transmission capabilities of the control by using digital signature technology. The last one is reducing the video transmission delay by setting the buffer of the control.All the improved functions of the network video play system are tested. The results show that the RTP streams compressed by the MPEG-4 standard from network can be played in the IE browser with good image and small delay. The snapshot and recording is stable. The control can run in the browser with good performance.
