With the construction of the 3G network accelerating, China Mo-bile's metropolitan transport network will face a great challenge as how to efficiently, flexibly and reliably deliver the IP-based services in the future. It has been the goal of the China Mobile's experiments and re-searches for the recent years to develop and explore a new generation of transport network, which overcomes the limits of transport networks built on traditional technology, and which not only can bear the current 2G/3G services, but also meets the demand to bear all kinds of future services and data services including the new mobile network services, and to achieve uniform bearing, efficient operation and maintenance, and integrated management on one unified network.By analyzing and comparing several major kinds of IP-based bearer technology, Henan Mobile has determined to use PTN as the bearing technology for the next generation of metropolitan transport net-work, and has made a plan of building a trial network using PTN tech-nology in Zhengzhou Mobile's metropolitan transport network.Based on analysis of the situation and service demand of the current metropolitan transport network, starting from several kinds of solution technology for the metropolitan packet transport network, this paper fo-cuses on technical characteristics the of PTN technology and the cur-rent conditions of mainstream PTN devices, analyzes the test results and application of PTN on Zhengzhou Mobile metropolitan transport net-work, and summarizes the feasibility of extensive PTN application, its deployment strategies, construction plan, etc.This Thesis mainly includes:1) Investigation on the current situation and service demand of metropolitan transport network.2) Analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of packet bearer network technology.3) Investigation and analysis of current key PTN technology and PTN devices.4) Testing plan and results of the PTN trial network.5) Research on PTN Application.
