With the economic and social development, the demand of information to the people is increasing, the network bandwidth also put forward higher requirement. All telecommunications services must be available to users through access network to, and existing access network consisting mainly of the copper access network, providing bandwidth and transfer distances are limited, has been unable to meet the demands of large-capacity information transmission. In order to address this growing contradiction, in backbone network is already quite mature optical fiber communication technology was eventually introduced to the access network. According to the fiber from the user's distance, optical access network can be divided into FTTCab (Fiber To The Cabinet), FTTB/C (Fiber To The Building/Curb), FTTO (Fiber To The Office), FTTH (Fiber To The Home) and FTTV (Fiber To The Village), etc, collectively referred to as FTTx, where FTTH is the ultimate goal of fiber access. As the PON (Passive Optical Network) technology appears, which has low cost and easy maintenance of properties, it makes the FTTx PON construction mode to be widely used. This paper mainly based on perspective of telecom operators to explore the problem in the fierce market competition and limited investment environment, how to segment customers and application scenarios, and choice a reasonable FTTx construction mode, ensure maximum return on investment. This paper focuses on three aspects:first, PON technical basis, related principle and key technology; second, FTTx PON Construction mode of China Unicom in different application scenarios; third, PON Construction instance in Zhejiang Unicom. This paper combines the actual work, focus on comprehensive integration of theoretical study and engineering practice.
