"Ke(可)" is not only used frequently in modern Chinese, but also applied widely. Recently as we study modern Chinese deeper and deeper, the scholars pay more attention to the study of "ke(可)". This paper takes the modal adverb "ke(可)" in modern Chinese as the main target, studies "ke (可)" in the language environments of modern Chinese in details, and mainly takes the ways of combining the description with the explanation. From a new perspective we analyze the semantics, the syntax, the pragmatics and the function of discourse of "ke(可)" systematically and roundly on the basis of the previous studies.The whole paper consists of four chapters besides the conclusion part. The concrete contents are shown as following:The first chapter is the introduction part, which includes the purpose and significance of this paper, the research object, the research scope, the approach of the study, the other scholars' research, and the sources of materials.The second chapter is the. semantic analysis of "ke(可)". First we start with the dictionary definitions of "ke(可)" and describe basic meaning and derivative meaning of "ke(可)" in specific language environment. Then combined with specific examples, we discuss the semantic background and semantic pattern of "ke(可)"The third chapter is the syntactic analysis of "ke (可) ". We discuss the components after "ke(可)", the syntactic distribution of "ke(可)", and co-occurrence of "ke(可)" and other components.The fourth chapter is the pragmatic and the function of discourse analysis of "ke(可)". First we describe the sentence mode distribution of "ke(可)", the pragmatic function of "ke(可)" and the pragmatic effects of "ke(可)". Then we discuss the way and the function of its coherence.The last part is the conclusion which summarizes and concludes the main contents of this paper. Meanwhile, it points out the inadequacies of this paper.
