Based on the previous studies, this thesis analyzes the adverb "pianpian" from the aspects of semantics, syntax and pragmatics. Instead of the previous analyze method, the research goes with a different view, the analyze goes under each meaning items of the adverb "pianpian" in the dictionary, and gets further explanation on the pending issues.The thesis is composed of five parts:The first part is the introduction. The introduction gives research meaning of modal adverb "pianpian", a general introduction of the related research. And, explains the basic idea of research target, the analyze method and the source of the linguistics material.The second part is the study for the semantic feature of the modal adverb "pianpian", gets the clear explanation for each meaning item's difference and relationship. And, explains the necessity of setting the third meaning item and approves the limiting referred scope function of the third meaning item also cover time and space.The third part describes and analyzes the syntactic feature for each type of "pianpian" sentence with different predicates, and explains the applicable condition of "pianpian" as a modifier on the phrase level.The fourth part discusses the pragmatic function from several aspects. Firstly, explains the different discourse function from the adversative conjunctions. Secondly, get the clear explanation for each meaning item's difference on subjectiveness and compares the difference between "pianpian" and the adverb "pian" on subjectiveness. Thirdly, describes and analyzes the informative focus for each type of "pianpian" sentence with different meaning items, and the focus type. Last, describes and analyzes the feature of "pianpian" sentence in the aspects of unexpected focus markers' informative type and referred direction.The last part, it's a conclusion of the thesis.
