The modal adverb "bing" is often used in modern Chinese. By describing and explaining, the thesis focuses on the characteristics of "bing" from syntactic, semantic and pragmatic issues. The thesis mainly comprises three parts.In the first part, the thesis talks about the characteristics of syntactic structure from two aspects. The first aspect starts with the type of the negative word behind of "bing". The second aspect begins with other syntactic parts. As a result, the negative word behind of "bing" can be verb that indicates negation and can be negative adverb, but not all negative adverbs can appear behind of the modal adverb "bing". In addition, the structure of "bing+ negative word+X" can not appear with modal particle "le"; the modal adverb "bing" can not appear with the temporal adverbs, manner adverbs, intensifiers and categorical adverbs; the modal adverb "bing" can not appear before the single negative adverb; the modal adverb "bing" can not appear before the fixed phrases similar with "bu de bu".In the second part, the thesis analyzes the presupposition types and the function of the modal adverb "bing" from the presupposition of semantic and pragmatic. And also analyzes the meaning of the modal adverb "bing" in different semantic types. The thesis divides the presupposition of "bing" sentence into overt presupposition and implicit presupposition. The thesis believes that the modal adverb "bing" can stress the negative mood and also can soften the negative mood. At last, the thesis analyzes the meaning of the modal adverb "bing" in six semantic types.In the third part, the thesis studies the modal adverb "bing" from the aspect of teaching. The thesis believes that we should emphasize the pragmatic rule in the teaching of the modal adverb "bing", and we should use the theory of presupposition. The thesis emphasizes the presupposition of "bing" by makingreferences.
