Objective: To extracte and summarize the conceptive phrases, descriptive phrases and derivative phrases of the symptomatic units.Methods: A database of clinical records in the past dynasties which is supported by the National Natural Science Fund Project of China (No.30772695), subjective selected subjects program of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (No.ZZ2006022), 11th Five‐year National Science Support Project of China (No.2006BAI08B01‐05) and National Science and Technology Major Projects (No: 2009ZX10005‐019) has been established. Based on the symptomatic description from the database of clinical records in the past dynasties, the conceptive phrases, descriptive phrases and derivative phrases are summarized according to the nomenclative principle of the technology terms, phrase categories in the lexics and the authoritative works of the symptomatology in Chinese medicine.Results: 427 conceptive phrases of 427 symptomatic units, 10 979 descriptive phrases of 411 symptomatic units, 11 728 derivative phrases of 418 symptomatic units are confirmed in the paper.Conclusions: The conceptive phrases, descriptive phrases and derivative phrases may provide a method for the standardization of the symptomatic names of Chinese medicine.
