Background: In fact, Classification is the most simple and effective means ofrevealing symptomatic attribute. However, Classification of the Symptoms in authoritativeworks of traditional Chinese medicine is usually according to the four traditional methodsof diagnosis: observation, listening, interrogation, and pulse-taking. Anatomy studys theshape and structure of human body from a macroscopic perspective, histology from amicrocosmic perspective, and embryology from the view of evolution embryos. Therefore,the symptoms in TCM should be observed from different views. This article will analysethe different views, and categorize399symptoms, Which will help us to have a moreprofound understanding of symptoms in TCM.Objective: To give classification methods of399symptoms in TCM through theanalysis of the symptomatic attribute.Methods: Based on the principle of partition and concept of cover, we summarize theattribute of symptoms in TCM and use them to classify the symptoms.Results: Six views of the classification are confirmed in the paper:①399symptomsare divided into two types according to the observer, it is respectively self-feelingsymptoms and other-feeling symptoms.②399symptoms are divided into four typesaccording to the sources of information, it is respectively observation, listening,interrogation, and pulse-taking symptoms.③399symptoms are divided into three typesaccording to the location of symptoms, it is respectively abnormal symptoms of thefunction of Five-Zang organs, Zang and Fu place to live, form and structure, andorifices.④399symptoms are divided into six types according to the types of disease, it isrespectively symptoms of disease of department of gynaecology, skin surgical symptoms,otorhinolaryngologic symptoms, symptoms of eye diseases and symptoms of medical disease.⑤399symptoms are divided into two types according to the the patients complain,it is respectively complained symptoms and non-complained symptoms.⑥399symptomsare divided into four types according to characteristic of cognition, it is respectivelysensory symptoms, mood symptoms and mental symptoms.Conclusions: There are two classification methods of symptoms in TCM, itrespectively is partition and cover, Which can be used to illustrate the attribute of eachsymptom. Classification of symptoms in TCM also has the great significance of clinicaldiagnosis and therapeutic effect evaluation.
