Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) based on wireless sensor networks by adding a powerful video, audio and other multimedia capture devices, is a kind of distributed network systems made up with multimedia sensor nodes of sensing, computing and communicating. The multimedia sensor collected multimedia (audio, video, or images etc.) information in the surrounding environment, and then send it on manner of multi-hop data collection to the sink nodes, by doing this, WMSNs can achieve the tasks that on across-the-board, fine-grained, accurately information in environment monitoring. WMSNs have a very prospective future and it can be used in military field, monitoring of environment, health caring, transportation in city, space exploration, and so on. Because of WMSNs'large value, it has given arisen to great regard to military, academia and industry circle in the world, and gradually becomes the research focus in recent years. However it is quite a challenge to design efficient routing protocols for WMSNs, because of the applied environment of WMSNs if complex and changeable, the limited energy carried by sensor nodes, the narrow bandwidth in wireless communication process, There are also the requirement multi-QoS (Quality of Service). Therefore, how to design a routing algorithm that can utmost save nodes energy, effectually balance energy consumption in network, and support multi-QoS and multi-path transmission, has become a hot area in WMSNs, and it is also has been one of key issues related to studying in WMSNs.The paper in-depth studied the current mainstream WMSNs routing protocols, compared support multi-QoS routing protocol, multi-path routing protocols and energy-sensitive routing protocols with each other, summed up their own advantages, disadvantages and usage scenarios, and at last, the paper proposed a location-based and non-uniformly distributed environment and energy-aware routing algorithm named (NELA) for wireless multimedia sensor networks. NELA algorithm has the excellent performances by the simulation experimental results compared.NELA routing protocol assumes that each node has known location of the destination node, after the sense network initialized randomly, all nodes find out their neighbor nodes, and select a certain angle by way of the prior region accord as the number of neighbor nodes, these nodes are the prior neighbor nodes in the prior region. When the prior neighbor node is empty, widen the angle of the prior region in order to widen the scope of prior region until find out a satisfied node. When the network needs to send or forward data, sending node choose the fitting to conditions prior neighbor nodes and record their IDs until arrive at the destination node according to QoS requirements and neighbor nodes'residual energy, if the node is the route empty that inform the prior node to re-selection next hop node.Because of the limitation of nodes'energy in WMSNs, some nodes will be unavailable after the energy consumed, and some nodes be added or be removed frequently in WMSNs. Therefore, the nodes will detect neighbor nodes after a certain time intervals to discover process.
