Wireless multimedia sensor networks(WMSN), a new type of sensor networks, develop on the basis of the wireless sensor networks(WSN). As the combination of WSN and multimedia processing technology, WMSN not only have the characteristics of flexibility, self-organization and low-cost, but also make up the deficiency of WSN in multimedia data acquisition, meet the needs of monitoring on the complicated environment for a long time. WMSN can be widely used in intelligent monitoring, remote medical treatment and other fields.Wireless multimedia sensor networks, collecting, processing and transporting a large number of audio and video information, have the characteristics of large amount of data and high real-time requirements. In order to use the nodes’ resource efficiently and transmit the message correctly, routing protocols for WMSN should use the energy efficiently in the multimedia data processing, and meet the requirements of quality of service. The audio and video information make routing algorithm for WSN difficult to directly apply to WMSN. Routing, as an important support of WMSN, has become a research topic in the field of WMSN.Firstly, this paper make a comprehensive introduction of WMSN, including the concept, architecture, applications and the key technique in the field. Then, according to the characteristics of WMSN, its routing design challenges and goals are analyzed. This paper introduces several kinds of common routing algorithm for WMSN and analyzes the development direction of routing protocol. Ad hoc on demand distance vector routing algorithm(AODV) are researched, including its route discovery and maintenance process. Multipath routing algorithms and congestion avoidance mechanisms are analyzed. According to the characteristics of WMSN transmitting a large amounts of data and combined with the advantage of AODV routing algorithm, this paper puts forward the energy efficient multipath AODV routing algorithm(EEMP-AODV). EEMP-AODV builds multipath from source node to destination node, and ensures the reliability of data transmission. In order to achieve energy balancing and extend the entire networks’ lifetime, hop count and nodes’ residual energy are taken into account in route choice. Combining with the new type of partially disjoint path structure, EEMP-AODV avoids congestion and improves the network throughput by divide date rate into multipath. Finally, NS2 is used to simulate the proposed routing protocol. In the same simulation environment, AODV, AOMDV(Ad Hoc On Demand Multipath short Vector routing) and EEMP- AODV routing algorithm are simulated. The result shows EEMP-AODV routing algorithm has a significant improvement on the performance of real-time, reliability, throughput and lifetime.
