The traditional design of mechanism is mainly depended on the engineers' experience and manual. However, in general some engineers lack of experience, and using mechanism manual is unintuitive and inefficient. Additionally, understanding the main size and performance parameters is necessary when comparing, evaluating and choosing design proposals. Being aimed at these problems in the traditional design of mechanism, and to achieve the parametric top-down design of mechanism, this paper researched and developed the conventional database of mechanism which is based on the component model.It researched the Pro/TOOLKIT, which is the secondary development tool of Pro/E, and researched the methods of database construction and retrieval mode of mechanism, and identified the overall program and module program, combining the common database tool.Based on analyzing the existing methods of mechanism classification, the paper reclassified the mechanism and selected some conventional ones. It realized the system using the redevelopment of Pro/E, the database technique, and the results of CAD technology, as well as according to the requirement of the theory of mechanism design and the requirement of rapid design. It gave one thought and means of the mechanisms top-down design which is based on the conventional database of mechanism.The system finished the parametric modeling design, assembly and kinematics simulation of some typical mechanism, and realized parametric drive of the key parameters and measure of kinematical key parameters, and used top-down design patterns in the whole process.It analyzed of mechanism kinetic characteristic and realized the rapid, visual design of the key parameter, using the kinematics emulation of Pro/E, and finished the classification and fuzzy search of mechanism using SQL Server 2005, and devised the interactive interface based on Visual C++ 2005.NET.
