Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is a collection of wireless mobile nodes forming a non-center, distributed, dynamic and multi-hop network. According to the network structure, MANET can be generally sorted into two categories: flat and hierarchical. Routing protocol is the base of network communication. In the design of routing protocols, the introduction of load-balancing mechanism can balance the network load effectively and improve the network overall performance.Firstly, by analyzing the needs of routing protocol in the hierarchical network, we propose a hierarchical network OLSR protocol based on the OLSR protocol and describe the design ideas and the details. Hierarchical network OLSR protocol can provide correct routes for the communications in the subnet and among the subnets. Collaborating with the mobile IPv6, Hierarchical network OLSR protocol can ensure the communication continuity when a node moves into another subnet. For the inherent route coupling in MANET, we propose an OLSR-based multi-channel multi-path routing protocol with load balancing, which is called MMRP_LB. MMRP_LB regards the available channel bandwidth as the reference of the node load and establishs multiple node disjoint paths which have the wider available channel bandwidth and the smaller hops. Every path is assigned a channel. MMRP_LB takes advantages of multiple channels and data can be transmissed parallelly in different channels and differentl paths, which can effectively reduce the co-channel interference and achieve better load balancing effect. In order to improve the reliability and survivability of the hierarchical network, we propose a multi-gateway load balancing protocol-MGLB based on the hierarchical network OLSR protocol. To achieve load balancing, MGLB allows the secondary nodes to access the higher class network through multiple gateways (the first_level node), and relys on multiple gateways to distribute the data equally. To test the feasibility of the proposed algorithms,we create simulation platforms based on OPNET 14.5. By different simulation scenarios, we validate the design of hierarchical network OLSR protocol is correct and feasible and demonstrate MMRP_LB and MGLB can improve the network performance effectively.
