Since its inception, the workflow technology has already achieved significant development, and the workflow management system is also used in many areas. However, the further development is wanted to achieve in the workflow technology, and a more extensive application is egered to obtain in the workflow management system. It is a question that currently the workflow management system must improve its versatility, usability and flexibility to meet customers'expectations. In this dissertation, the author has made some useful attempts about improving the versatility, usability and flexibility of the existing workflow systems. Refered to the Workflow Management Coalition's reference model and designed the workflow process definition tool which has the more functions, the more novel interfaces and the more convenient operations. The following are the specific work in this dissertation:Firstly, WfMS related concepts and XPDL are introduced. Then the modules of the workflow system based on XPDL are discussed. Decide to design a workflow process design tool which based on XPDL, which can enhance versatility of the workflow process design tool.Furthermore, the architecture of the workflow design tool is introduced and the implementation of all the modules is given out. A visible design platform is provided, which can generate XPDL document automatically according to the graphic description. Moreover, it parses and displays the XPDL documents more easily and the model package is allowed to be modified at any moment. All of these are shown a good flexibility of the process design tool. Finally, an application case is presented by step to step in order to show how to use the workflow designer. It is shown that the system is practical and convenient.
