Service Level Agreement (SLA) is a formal negotiated agreement about the level of the service quality between two parties--service provider and customer. Monitoring and assessing the SLA parameter of the managed network through the SLA -oriented network monitoring system is one of the most important part in the management of SLA life cycle.Network topology is a basic attribute of the network. Topology management is one of the most and basic part in any network management and monitoring system. Network topology discovery and monitoring not only can provide the holistic network structure and state to the two sides of the SLA contract , it can also help us to specify the end-to-end path of the services, which is the foundation of the collection, calculation and analysis of the network SLA parameters.In this system, Topology management has two main functions: topology discovery and topology monitoring. Topology discovery is designed to discover the network equipments and the links between them. Topology monitoring is designed to monitor the changes of the discovered network topology.Firstly, this paper introduces the SLA-related information, analyzes the differences and relationships between the SLA -oriented network monitoring system and the traditional network management system and shows the importance of the topology management in this system. Then the paper introduces several network protocols and tools which can be used to manage the topology, and discusses several algorithms of topology discovery and monitoring.Secondly, according the actual network environment which the SLA monitoring system operates in, this paper improves and realizes a new topology discovery algorithm based on the traditional SNMP topology discovery algorithm. The paper also gives a new topology monitoring algorithm which combines SNMP and active probe based on ICMP/UDP/TCP protocols.Finally, the experimental and operation result of the topology management module in the UESTC campus network show the accuracy and efficiency of the algorithms.
