Traditional wired solutions used in process control systems are often costliness, hard to wire, and even unable to be employed in some occasions. To solve these problems, a wireless solution based on wireless sensor networks is introduced in this paper, contraposing to the traits of process control system. This solution realizes a three-layered structure, that is, wireless remote IO-wireless gateway-network management computer, and fixes the problems in traditional wired solutions. The sensors and actuators in this system constitute a self-organizing wireless network by wireless remote IOs, which has the mesh topology. The system is able to be connected with the traditional field bus and Internet, thus to realize control and remote monitoring. Network management computer is responsible for network configuration, scheduling on communications between wireless remote IOs, routing table management, and network health testing, etc.Firstly, deficiencies of traditional wired solutions are analyzed in this paper, and a wireless solution is brought up. Also, the advantages of this wireless solution and the structure of the system are analyzed. After that, an overall design is introduced, contraposing to the core part, wireless remote IO, of the wireless solution. Then, the embedded operating system, TinyOS, used in wireless remote IO and corresponding drivers designed by nesC language are discussed in detail. Afterwards, routing protocol AODV introduced from Ad Hoc network is modified and realized contraposing to the traits, mesh topology and self-organization, of wireless remote IOs. Finally, each part of the design is tested, and the feasibilities in process control systems are validated in Integrated Training Platform of Industrial Control System designed by Automation department.
