It is extremely important to ensure the dam safe operation as it is a special construction. Based on the dam seepage monitoring, wireless sensor network is employed in the dam monitoring in the paper. Many traits have been studied in the current dam monitoring, and the program and technical reserves are made to fix these traits in the engineering.This paper firstly summarizes the development trend and status quo of dam safety monitoring and wireless sensor network. After knowing the standards and equipment requirements in dam safety monitoring, a wireless solution has been proposed, which is based on wireless sensor network. Secondly the hardware and software of wireless sensor networks nodes are designed and implementated. The hardware of wireless node is divided into a few modules, different nodes and functions can be realized through different combinations of these modules. These modules include the solar power conversion module, the wireless transceiver module, the I/O board module, the serial communication module and the seepage sensor detector module. Software is designed in the TinyOS operating system in nesC language. Software design bases on components, which uses in TinyOS. The software design consists of the routing protocol, the time synchronization, and application programmes. Finally, the author debugs the hardware and software, and discusses some problems in debugging.The solution proposed for dam monitoring solves the problem of high costs and implementation difficulties, which based on wireless sensor network, as a result, it can be deployed in dam and worth to be advised.
