Virtual reality (VR) technology, which combines some advanced technical elements such as computer graphics,computer simulation technique,human-machine Interface techniques,Multimedia technology and Sensor Technology, is hot nowadays. It brings a revolution that transforms the way people know and experience the world. With the rise of theories as"digital earth","digital city", all trades and professions are exploring the application potential of VR, thus a broad space for VR's development is opened up.With the continuous development of national electric power industry, it requires more for the construction of electric power infrastructure. VR Technology is introduced as a new tool to meet this demand since traditional methords can no longer fullfill the task. Electrical substation is the key of all power grid's infrastructure, of which the designing quality determins whole grid's work efficiency. So the course of drafting,approving and modifying must be undergone many times. The designing could be improved by researching on VR's application; the researching value is reflected by comparing the impact after it is applied. It will be a very commendable attempt to test this tool by researching VR Tecnology during the designing of electric substation project.In this text, firstly there is a longitudinal research on VR's relevant background and development course, which aims to know more about its history and application environment, to know what's on recently, to know its latest trends and development trends. Then, through a horizontal study on the existing situation of VR's application in all trades and professions, we can get a sense of people's familiarity with this technology, also some practical experience from it is learned. Through the learning of its theory,relevant computer techniques and background information, the main technical points are grasped step by step, which promise a foundation for the following practical manufacturing.Then VR technology is applied in specific application with the knowledge of software engineering. We take steps making system analysis,demanding analysis,detailed planning,specific application and testing to know more about technical characteristics and demandings. We should clear design objective, establish tasks planning, confirm strategy and function framework, in this way guidance objective and efficiency for further manufacturing is guaranteed.At last, project file is estabilshed by practical manufacturing. The designing of the project is improved to be more efficient by practical applying and testing, which already shows satisfying effects. Really convenience is brought to enterprises and the advantage of VR is felt. At the same time, firsthand technical experience is gained, also we get familiar with VR's application tools and the fruits of grasped knowledge is tested. Further more, we get even deeper understanding of this technical knowledge through finding new problems and improve strategy. All these provide very good inspiration for VR technology's enen wider application.
