With the application of Gas Insulated Switchgears and the closed underground environment,underground substation requires higher educated and skilled operators than a conventional substation does. The paper introduces the design of a platform for simulating the complicated operating environment of an underground substation by virtual reality technology, includes three-dimension modeling of architectural structure, electrical device and industrial ancillary system. Based on that, a alive virtual environment is created. The system can offer students various trainings, for example routine inspection, underground substation operation and contingency handling. It enable the trainees operate without any dangerous and also enhance the safe operation awareness and operational skills of trainees. The paper introduces the development of three-dimensional virtual reality simulation training system for the underground substation. The main works in this dissertation are as the following:(1) Based on the operational characteristics of EHV underground substation, the paper sum up the special characteristics of underground substation, includes building structure, electrical device and auxiliary system. After that, it offers training programs of underground substation for particular operational characteristics. The training content of the underground substation auxiliary systems is also highlighted.(2) Optimizing three-dimensional virtual reality system, the system provides a more realistic and fluent scene rendering effects of underground substation. It meets the needs of real-time scene rendering and data synchronization.(3) The method for achieving simulation training system configuration functions at all levels is proposed. The simulation training system is considered as a combination of three-dimensional modeling, physical behavior, electrical behavior, and database. With the four levels of components and all levels of the component library, it meets the various types packaging substation modeling and electrical equipments. The system can easily edit the substation electrical equipment to simulate the substation expansion and renovation. (4) The paper realizes teachers-students-machine based distributed training system architecture. And the data interface and database interaction system between distributed systems and simulation synchronization are introduced.(5) At last, the paper summarizes the results of the study and puts forward the directions of future study.
