Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format. Blu-ray is currently supported by about 200 of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer, recording media, video game and music companies. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVD and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented 1920x1080 HD video and up to 7.1 channels Audio experience. The inclusion of a Java Virtual Machine as well as network connectivity in Blu-ray devices will allow updates to Blu-ray Discs via the Internet, and provide more value added services. The free embedded Linux distribution and plenty of free open source libaraies on Linux reduce the expense on developing a Blu-ray playback system.Firstly, the current status of Standard DVD playback system software is analyzed. The advantages and development prospects of Embedded Linux based Blu-ray playback system software are discussed by comparing with other existing Blu-ray playback system. Then, the system requirements and reference model which defined in Blu-ray standard BDROMv2.1 are analyzed. The entire software system is divided into three layers to be discussed. The design and communication mechanism of Module Manager Sub-system, Virtual File system and Player Sub-system is analyzed. The analysis is focused on the design and implementation of Player sub-system.And the implementing of player subsystem based on Embedded Linux Open source drivers, such as DirectDB and V4L2, is also discussed.
