Diode-Pumped Solid-State Laser (DPSSL) is a hot research spot in the solid-state laser field, in which side-pumped operation has a high practical value due to the output of laser beam with high energy and high peak power. This thesis mainly focused on the optimal design of this kind of laser. By writing the computer simulation program, the distributions of pumping optical power absorbed by the gain medium have been calculated under the different circumstances like adopting different gain materials or changing the parameters of pumping geometry. Then, the design of the experimental device was completed with the help of the numerical simulation results, based on which the mechanical structure of the laser diode side-pumped neodymium-ion laser was also devised. This laser successfully generated the 1.06μm laser beam with room temperature and under the measure of employing temperature control unit. The fluorescent waveform, the characteristics like laser waveforms, output laser energy and divergent angles under the condition of both free and Q-switch operations were tested. The experimental research basically matches with the theoretical analysis, and the optical-optical efficiency of 16.18% was also obtained under the free operation. A whole process of designing a diode-side-pumped neodymium-ion sample laser has been completed: bibliography reference, apparatus design, manufacture and adjustment, which has laid a solid foundation for further improvement of the experimental apparatus and eventually produce a marketable device.
