The 21st century is a rapid developing era of the combined application of information and high technology, and hospital management and information management staff should serve the development and construction of hospitals with rich information resources. Hospital Management Information System is relatively mature in big province- and city-level hospitals in China, but the application level of computers is rather low in the overwhelming majority of county- and town-level hospitals, though computers have been used in these hospitals. The selected subject primarily aims at small and medium-sized hospitals, township hospitals, private hospitals, grassroots hospitals and so on, and enables small and medium-sized hospitals to quickly build a practical, convenient and highly efficient hospital information management system with the least cost as fast as possible to realize the digitalization of hospital management. The modular design is employed in the Hospital Management Information System which is developed by me and my two colleagues. The system is composed of three major parts: out-patient management, drug management and hospitalization management. PowerBuilder8.0 servers as the development platform, MS SQL Server 2000 databases are used, Win2003 Server acts as the system platform, the Client/Server model is mainly employed for the system architecture, and Windows XP is the main application platform. In this system development process, the author is mainly responsible for the function design of drug management which includes the drugstore module design and the storehouse module design. The drug management module covers the functions such as drug being put into storehouse, drug being classified, drug being taken out of storehouse, drugstore charging, drug inventorying, and system maintenance. The module follows the mainline of medical drug management to realize the overall informationalization with the major design philosophy of "Taking Patients as the Center". The module design mainly intensifies the security of system and data, the standardization of architecture and component design, the quick real-time response, the friendliness of human-computer interface design, the compatibility of adapting to medical insurance information, etc., and the system can complete the collection, transmission, storage and use of various drug information in hospitals. This paper firstly discusses the current situations of small and medium-sized hospital management information systems, makes the related demand analysis through full market investigation and study, puts forwards the design principle and the expected overall goal, and presents the design model and structure of the hospital information system in the end. The fourth chapter emphatically introduces the design of the drug management part of the hospital information system which includes the function design and database design, and analyzes in detail the functional characteristics of various submodules and the design of related database tables. The system is put into test and operation after the system development is completed, and it can run accurately and highly efficiently after being debugged. With rather complete functions, the system basically meets the information management requirements of small and medium-sized hospitals. The team members will continue the system development and expand its functions and application range to better this system hereafter.
