With the fast development of robot, the application of small-scale multi-functional ground moving robots in fields like fire control, excluding explodes and anti-terrorism is becoming more and more popular. The research and development for long-distance monitoring systems of robot has become the focus at present and many organizations in and aboard are strengthening their research in this. This subject is derived from the engineering project "Mobile robot for special tasks" which is supported by Nanjing Science & Technical Office. According to experiment result of the sample robots and the targets of later study, the paper mainly focuses on searching for reasonable method to improve the performance of long-distance monitoring system of this mobile robot.Firstly, the paper combines with the system requirement and technical guide line of the item. It analyses and introduces the framework of this mobile robot. On the basis of analyzing the application of wireless LAN and long-distance monitoring technology in monitoring robot, the paper brought forward a long-distance monitoring and control system based on wireless LAN for this mobile robot.Secondly, long-distance monitoring system has been divided into different module and has been designed separately. The system is mainly divided into two modules :The one is sending out of control orders and sensor information displaying after sent back .The other one is acquisition and transmission for image. The first module is divided again into designing about man-machine interface of Above-PC,achieving of robot control command and displaying after the sensor data is sent back.Another module is divided into image compression-acquisition of Below-PC and wireless transmission and displaying. The technology applied is mainly DirectShow and WinSocket. Finally, a simulation test was carried on that would show us how the system performed. Router-centered wireless local area network under IEEE 802.11g standard and infrastructure mode was established in testing space. Testing result showed that throughput in space less than 150m without obstacle met the demand of remote monitoring and control.
