With the rapid development of computer science, communication science and sensescience and so on, there is a perfect opportunity which never heard of before for theapplication and development of robot. Within which the development and reformation oflong-distance monitoring technique in recent decades is one the best model for theembodiment on the advancement of computer science and modem communicationtechnique. This subject is derived from the engineering project "Mobile robot for specialtasks" which is supported by Nanjing Science & Technical Office. According toexperiment result of the sample robots and the targets of later study, the paper mainlyfocuses on searching for reasonable method to improve the performance of long-distancemonitoring system of this mobile robot.Firstly, the paper combines with the system requirement and technical guide line of theitem. It analyses and introduces the framework of this mobile robot. On the basis ofanalyzing the application of wireless LAN and long-distance monitoring technology inmonitoring robot, the paper brought forward a long-distance monitoring and control systembased on wireless LAN for this mobile robot.Secondly, long-distance monitoring system has been divided into different moduleand has been designed separately. Also, this paper has introduced that how the function ofthe consumer instruction entering equipment and the man-machine interface displaymodule realized, and the process of them. In this study, the video signal was acquiredtimely and transmitted wirelessly by webcam using software-based MPEG-4 compressionencoding method. Finally, an imitating test was carried on that would show us how the systemperformed. The test was found on a local control system which a laptop was to be taken asthe robot control end. Router-centered wireless local area network under IEEE 802.11gstandard and infrastructure mode was established in testing space. Testing result showedthat throughput in space less than 100m without obstacle met the demand of remotemonitoring and control.
