Millimeter-wave power amplifier is the key component in millimeter-wave transmitter system, and the performance affects the whole system indicators. With the rapid development of millimeter-wave circuits in the fields of communication, electronic, countermeasure and precision-guided weapon, etc. The research of millimeter-wave power amplifier is more important than any time before. In order to meet project's needs, this paper researches Ka-band power amplify technique. Ka-band 2 watt and 5 watt power amplifier is designed and fabricated. The main contents are as follows:1. The first chapter summarizes millimeter-wave characteristics, and introduces the purpose of millimeter-wave power amplifier. At the same time, it also includes a brief review of solid-state power amplifier's development on present.2. The second chapter describes the definition of power amplifier qualification. A design scheme of 2 watt and 5 watt power amplifier is provided which meets the needs of project.3. The third chapter introduces the procedures about 2 watt power amplifier's design and fabrication: First of all, according to three cascades connection structure, the proper amplifier's slugs are selected, and then their functional modes are described. Meanwhile, in terms of 2 watt power amplifier's high-gain, we design a structure of micro-strip and cavity in order to avoid self-excitation phenomenon. In response to project's needs, the power-output port uses closed dielectric micro-strip probe transition and applies CST emulation software to proceed electromagnetism emulation in the working frequency band. After all, we get good results after some adjustments. Thermal design are used on the structure of micro-strip and cavity. At last, 2 watt power amplifier is finished in 30.2GHz-30.7GHz working frequency.4. The forth chapter analyzes the procedures about 5 watt power amplifier's design and fabrication: It contains a driving amplifier and a power amplifier. At the first step, we select power amplify slug properly, subsequently the proper driving amplify slug is selected which is fitted for the power amplify slug. The power-input port and the power-output port use micro-strip probe transition. CST software emulation are used in this structure, satisfied results are got in working frequency band through adjustments. Finally, through thermal design about micro-strip and the cavity's structure, 5 watt power amplifier is accomplished in 30.2GHz-30.7GHz working frequency. This paper also introduces the design of millimeter-wave amplifier's direct circuit and technique of the bonding, handling and mounting procedures for millimeter-wave MMICs, which ensure design goals of 2 watt and 5 watt power amplifier to accomplish successfully.
