Wireless mesh network (WMN) is a new network technology, deriving from Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and wireless local area networks (WLANs). Its appearance is to overcome the inherent defects in traditional wireless networks in order to make a revolution in the wireless broadband areas. One of the hot research area in WMNs is routing protocol. And ad hoc on-demanded vector (AODV) is one of the common routing protocols frequently used in WMNs. But few of the existing AODV codes have used effective routing metrics or optimized algorithms for QoS. Thus, considering the prospect of WMNs and their practical values, this paper combined the prevalent routing protocol AODV, the important routing metric ETX with the Spanning Tree algorithm which optimizes the whole network performance and proposed a novel routing protocol. This paper focus on the routing protocol and routing metric in WMNs:1. It made a comprehensive analysis and comparison on the existing routing protocol. To my best knowledge, no paper except this one has such a comprehensive review of routing metrics utilized in WMN.2. It used Linux 2.4 as operation system and modified AODV-UU 0.7.2 code with routing metric ETX and Spanning Tree algorithm. As a result, ETX makes AODV-UU have better routing performance. And the maintenance of spanning trees significantly reduces the RREQs flood and routing discovery latency which facilitate clients to access to ISP.3. The code was realized in the real world. The essential functions, routing discovery and maintenance, in the new code was implemented by setting plenty of parameters and designing test flatform referred to related standards. The testing result proves this code can function as AODV RFC3561 as well as has better performance.
