News Commentary Build To The Public Domain

The thesis conducts a content analysis on the editorials in China Youth Daily and Southern Metropolis News from 2003 to 2005 as well as cases studies to expound the possibility and impact of editorials constructing the public sphere in China. The paper uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative research approach.The paper first explores the type, topic, position and structure of editorials on daily newspapers to analyze the process, during which editorials construct the public sphere and the interaction between daily editorials and the public sphere. Then the thesis further probes into the public sphere influences on politics, democracy and government decision-making through the case studies.To wind up, the paper concludes that editorials construct the public sphere by shaping and accelerating the development of public opinions, social democratization, mainstream values, civil society, and the beneficial interaction between the public and the government. The paper also finds that the public sphere enlightens and promotes the Chinese public opinion and social transformation.
