Modern museums have been lasted more than 300 years, since the Ashmolean Museum was opened to the public in 1683. Publicness in museums came up with modern museums, which of the characteristics and connotations have being enriched with the development of the society. The development of publicness in museums is closely linked with collection, research, education and other functions of museums. During the development of history, museums have being changed their working styles, and strived to build a bridge of communication in the public. These are all depended on the publicness in museums. In order to discuss those problems systematically, this thesis is divided into 3 parts.First of all, I run back over the discussion of Chinese and foreign scholars on the word "publicness", and draw on the basis , I educe the understanding on this word. At the end of this section, I review the history of museums briefly.Next, I analysis the characteristics of publicness in museums, and elicit the characteristics of it. The first is intercommunity, it means that the cultural heritage belongs to the public as a whole; the second is opening, that the museum is a public domain ,and it has responsibilities in the public education; the third is participation, the public participate in the museum is a performance of him to exercises his right, and can make education more effectively. At last, the thesis aims at the shortcomings of Chinese museums, pointing out the imperfection of the publicness ,and bring forward my own opinions on the direction of Chinese museums in the future, that we should strengthen the status of Chinese museums as the center of the cultural heritage protection, and try our best to make them to be a public center of cultural activities.
