The paper discusses a design of RFID hand-held reader, which works for the exploited active RFID tags. The RFID reader works at 2.4~2.5GHz ISM band. The communication-distance between reader and tags is over 20m. In additional, the highest transmit/receive data rate is 1Mbps. Moreover, the reader has 32Mbyte data storage capacity. The design of the reader system is finished in terms of the quomodo integrating Software and Hardware design, which solved some critical questions as following:1. The single-chip nRF2401 was employed as radio frequency transceiver, to meet the request of being able to transmit RF data for long-distance at high data rate.2. The micro-processor W77E58 was used as system controller, for controlling the whole process in the system.3. The 32M×8bit NAND Flash memory K9F5608 was employed to store tags information into the reader system. By application of Time Sharing Reuse Technology, the contradiction between the mass capacity of information storage and the limitation of I/O interface on single-chip microcomputer was solved.4. The Timekeeping Chip DS1302 was used to create real-time time information, to actualize the function of real-time saving time information into system whenever the reader searches RF tags.5. The function of data communication between reader and PC was actualized.6. The computer-user interface was improved and the operation for user was facilitated by the application of LCD module and serial interface keyboard. This kind of RFID reader is applicable to goods management in large storage, garage management and vehicle passes-management in large apartment building. It has broad marketing perspective since it features convenient portability, low cost, high reliability and facile operation. In addition, it offers valuable reference for other RFID reader design.
