| As a poet of vernacular in the early Tang Dynasty, Wang Fanzhi ,whose poems spread extensively in that time, is unknown to all. We cannot find his works in Poems of Tang Dynasty(Quan Tang Shi), and they are unmentioned ever since Song Dynasty. Not until we discovered the manuscripts found in Tun-huang in early 20th century did we know him and his poems again. Although short and easy to understand, W's(Wang Fanzhi) vernacular poems reflect social reality directly, so they hold the value both as literal and as historical materials. This paper can be divided into three parts: The first part is an academic look back into the annotation, spreading, missing and the process of rediscovery of W's poems. In the second part, it mainly discusses the poet himself, time , thought and the value as historical materials of his poems. At last, this paper revises the book Proofreading and Annotation of W's Poems written by Xiang Chu.Although W's poems are more 300, most of them are missing and only 20 or more are passed down to us. Fortunately, we discover a large amount of manuscripts of his poems in Tun-huang. In the first part, this paper describes the poet and his poems recorded in every successive previous dynasty, from which it confirms his 25 poems, and the process from how manuscripts of his poems were missing all over the world to how they were collected and studied in the 20th century. Then it looks back into the elder scholars'tough academic research, and shows the readers the remarkable achievements of the new generation of scholars. Additionally, it introduces the contents and characters of manuscripts of his poems found in Tun-huang and newly appeared copies in these years so as to help the readers know him and his poems well.In the second part, this paper studies and discusses the poet and his poems. As materials concerning him are few, there are always different voices on time of his poems in academic field. Through researching the contents of his poems and referring to historical materials, this paper established that he is a poet of early Tang Dynasty. Most of W's five-word vernacular poems, characterized by the nature of mottoes, prompted people to pay attention to self-restraint and obey the public morals. And still a considerable amount of them advocates Buddhism, so he is always considered as a monk poet. There are also some, which contains profound thought, influenced deeply by Daoism and Buddhism telling people to be unconventional and see through the emptiness of the material world. In Poetry Pattens, Jiao Ran praised him that with generosity inside, his poems leave us an amazing and outstanding impression.Extensive aspects of social life have been reflected in W's poems, especially the lower class, which is described vividly. For example, the social systems, customs and religious thought are reflected in his poems Fertile Farmland (Fu Rao Tian She), Poor Farmers (Pin Qiong Tian She Han), and Bad Officials (Tian Xia E Guan Zhi) which not only hold the value as historical materials but also add evidence to history study.Proofreading and Annotation of W's Poems written by Xiang Chu collects more poems than any other book, which is also the most detailedly annotated. However, there are sill some points which are not appropriate. The third part of the paper revises Xiang Chu's book. |
