IBR(image based rendering) is one of the hot topics of VR(virtual reality) technology this years. VPS(Virtual Panoramic Space) is one of the hot topics of IBR. Commonly, VPS system is made of three subsystems, Panoramic-image Maker, Panoramic-space Maker and Panoramic-space Brower, the thesis aims to study the realization of the Panoramic-image Maker of Virtual Panoramic Space system. Panoramic image is created through stitching several overlapping images. In this thesis, some efforts on panoramic-image mosaic are performed and, specifically, the following new methods are presented.Projection Algorithm: Cylinder and shperical surface projection algorithm are studied and carried out in order to achieve vision consistency.A Feature-Based Image Mosaic Method: In this method, the features are first extracted and described by SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) method and the nearest neighbors of each feature are found out by priority search. Then the homography is calculated by RANSAC(Random Sample Consensus), and a bundle-adjustment algorithm is applied when there are more than two source images. A bundle adjustment algorithm based on the minimization of the distances of feature matches is also introduced to remove the accumulation of errors.VPS System Implementation: Based on the methods described above, applications on image mosaic are also explored in this paper and several subsystems are introduced: Panoramic-image Maker, Panoramic-space Maker and Panoramic-space Brower.After summing up the research work, this thesis points out some future research works.
