The technique of panoramic image-based rendering is one of ways which can realize virtual navigation of university digital museum effectively.This paper constructs a platform of creating panoramic images by such steps as image collection, project, matching and image smoothness. The platform was exploited in a computer with the operating system Windows 2000, memory of 256M and CPU of Pentium IV 1.4G. The tools are software of Visual C++ 6.0 and OpenGL extension library based on Windows platform.Because partial picture was shot from different direction, their projection plane has angle inevitably. To maintain spacial constraint relationship of actual scene and keep visual consistency, each partial image which describes its projection plane must be projected to one surface. Cylindrical panoramic project has such advantages as getting image easily, storing image data and accessing it conveniently and wide applicability. In this paper, cylindrical panoramic images was selected to project and a program called PanoImgProj was deigned in order to realize cylinder projection of panoramic images.After partial discrete images was projected, image mosaic must be taken in order to gain spacial set of view point, which the picture has the same view point but different view angle. In template matching algorithm based on area of picture, the problem that the speed of matching is slowly was existed. Under the condition of matching quality, raising matching speed is significant in constructing panoramic space. Considering feature of panoramic image mosaic, dimension of template, searching range and means of searching were researched in this paper. And a new type of optimization algorithm was presented based on template matching. This algorithm can greatly raise the speed of panoramic images. On the basis of the algorithm, a program of image mosaic was designed with the name of PanalmgMosaic.When making image mosaic, there exists very obvious mosaic trace if superposing two pictures simply as a result. And it isn't sealless mosaic. Some geometrical condition of neighbor sampling ofimage mosaic was researched in this paper. A new superposing method was presented based on a value of pixel power, which can resolve effectively image smoothness.This paper was sponsored by project of university digital museum construction engineering of national ministry of education.
