The fact that many software failed repeatedly reminds people of a simple and profound truth: relying on technology solely is difficult to provide a complete scheme of the development program; it is difficult to handle complex software projects. Every aspect of the software contains dual nature——technology and management, the quality of software product is closely related to technology and management. Fully adopting software engineering and process management is the pathway for our country to accelerate the industrialized software production. Currently there are gaps between theories and applications of software process and engineering. Furthermore, there are few medium or small software enterprises who can get benefit from the new software theories and practices (there are more medium or small enterprises in domestic software industry), medium or small domestic software enterprises with the limitation of their own characteristics and the influence of the external environment, are still unable to put the process technology well into the enterprise environment.This paper has systematically introduced the development, overall frame, internal levels, classification standard, and the process improvement guide——IDEAL model, introducing 5 maturity grades that CMM divides and the contents which 18 key process areas contain, then analyzing and comparing with the standards related to software process, such as the ISO9000 series and CMMI and concluding the advantages and adaptability; discussing the guiding role of integration technology including software engineering technology and CMM process management thinking used in the project development process. From practices, according to the reasons resulting in the "embarrassing" situation ISO 9000 faces, the paper analyzes the problems the enterprise may face when implementing the process improvement base on CMM, and from the view of authentication institution management, and of internal management of organizations as well, the paper analyzes the possibility to avoid"formalistic"process improvement in three aspects of developing the discipline, executing the discipline and abiding by the discipline. For CMM points out"what to do", but does not specify how to do, so with the guidance of IDEAL model and combining author's practical experience of process improvement, the author supplies a gradual improvement pathway for software process improvement.In the end, the author introduces his SPI practice , describe the the process and gains of SPI in the company where he practise as an intern graduate .
