VoIP, which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, is IP voice and speech technology. It takes advantage of world-wide popularity of Internet, and provides more convenient and better services. At present, as VoIP is focused by many organization and corporations through the world, it is becoming much more mature and robust than the past. It now provides most of PSTN services for consumers. There are two VoIP architectures, one is H.323, the other is SIP. Each of them has been put into the market, however SIP featured for simpleness, open source and expandable capacity has been adopted as one of NGN(Next Generation Network) nuclear protocols. A terminal with certain degree of intelligence is required by SIP. This terminal which charges for packing and un-packing voice packages, network transmission and session negotiation, is distinct from traditional telephone terminals. To deploy the SIP system, a brand-new telephone terminal must be designed.Embedded operation system eCos(embedded configurable operation system) based on GPL license is free and open. With the capacity of easy porting and configuration, eCos is more and more popular by designers of embedded system. Compared to uclinux, its simplified kernel is quite suitable for embedded application. This paper describes the realization of SIP terminal scheme on MCF5275, gives brief introduction of SIP terminal software and hardware architecture base on eCos, and describes the characteristic of the eCos kernel and steps of designing its drivers. Meanwhile the key technologies and the realization of protocols involved in VoIP are introduced ,and weights on PPPoE realization upon eCos.A simple Firmware update demo system is also introduced here.
