With the rapid development of computer technology,embedded technology is entering the era of full of opportunities in 21st century. Embedded Operating System has been well developed and got full growth. It has already been widely used in many fields from small portable devices like electronic watch, PDA and MP3 player to large controlling devices like traffic lights, factory controlling center and nuclear power station controlling system. There comes out many kinds of embedded operating system, for example, the most popular ones are VxWorks, WindowsCE, eCos, QNX, RT-Linux etc.Embedded GIS (Geography Information System) is a combination of embedded product and GIS functions. It is an solution of navigation, location, geography query and spatial data management for mobile users. Embedded Electronic Map is based on GIS, stored in the storage of Embedded Devices, and providing the user with show, zoom out, zoom in and locate map ability by using the embedded devices'display screen and peripheral equipments.The paper proposes a realization of electronic map on the embedded real time operating system eCos by researching on the development and advantages of eCos and electronic map technology.The main contents of the paper are following:1. Migration of eCos on the UPNET2410 target by researching of embedded operating system eCos and bootloader RedBoot. Also developing a new method of eCos boot which is auto boot based on the Nand Flash.2. Implement of SPI, I2C bus driver, touch screen and keyboard device driver by researching the composing and features of hardware device on the target board, combining with the analyzing the device driver framework of eCos. Those drivers are used to easily operate the electronic map for users.3. Expounding the system's graphical user interface software MiniGUI and geography information system MGIS, and then accomplishing the MGIS system based on the embedded operating system eCos and MiniGUI. 4. On the basis of touch screen and keyboard device driver of eCos, developing the test application for electronic map operation test.5. Analyzing the GPS data format and UART serial communication method, and then implement the pick-up and transfer of GPS data, sending those transferred data to the MGIS system to finish the location.6. Finally, test the whole system, prove the feasibility and applicability of the system, as well as further improvement measures will be discussed.
