Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), crossed by many subjects, is the advanced research hotspot field of recent international attention. The Sensor Network, which include the sensor technology embedded technology wireless network communication technology distributed information process technology and microelectro-mechanical technology, is able to real-time monitor apperceive and collect the information of environment or monitor object. The information is processed by embedded system and sent to terminal user via random autonomous wireless communication network with multi-hop relay manner. So it can implement the "Compute Everywhere" conception. It can be forecasted that with the progress and commonly application, Wireless Sensor Network will bring deeply influence and make a great promote to people's life and the transformation of industry.This paper researches WSN, the main work and fruit is: In theory, improve the algorithm of cluster-based routing protocols. In practice, design a hardware platform according to the standard. This paper researches deeply the routing protocols for WSN, and improved LEACH algorithm, which is the representative of the cluster-based routing protocols. We analyze IEEE802.15.4/ZigBee standard, and design a hardware platform according to the standard.The work of improvment of routing algorithm is: LEACH is selected to be the research target as the representative of the cluster-based routing protocols. We bring forward our improvements to LEACH protocol based on analyzing the shortages of it. One side in the former LEACH protocol, the cluster heads are determined randomly. The improved LEACH periodically selects cluster heads according to their residual energy and the distance between nodes. Other side we based on communication between cluster heads and base station to improve LEACH protocol. In the former LEACH protocol, every cluster heads communicate with the base station directly. The improved LEACH protocol let cluster heads communicate with the base station by multi-hop. The simulation results proved that the improved algorithms can achieve good performance in terms of network lifetime and energy consume.The work network platform design is: we analyze the IEEE802.15.4/ZigBee standard and SOC technology. Based on it we select Chipcon CC2430 as MCU and radio send-receive chip of our platform. Then we introduce the circuit design of the modules of nodes detailedly. After implementing the hardware platform, we build the software development system, and design the testing process of network platform. It is the base of the future work.In the end, we conclude our work, and give a prospect of the future work.
