XML technology portends a glorious future from its birth, especially with the recent fast development of Web Service in the latest one or two years, which becomes increasingly active in the XML data exchange and storage areas. The total volume of XML data are growing in the exponential- level, therefore more effective data management capabilities are in need, as well as faster and more accurate information-query system.Concerning the question how to handle XML data technically, there is a dispute, hence forms two camps: XML-Enabled DBMS (XED) and Native XML DBMS(NXD) .XED is the expansion of the XML supporting modules based on the original database, which accomplishes format conversion and transmission completes between XML data and database. Otherwise, NXD presents itself in the area of XML data processing, which generally adopts layer-model of data storage, and maintains the tree-structure of XML files, saving the conversion process between XML file and traditional database data.On one hand, native XML DBMS (NXD) has cut a figure, broken the absolute monopoly of traditional RDBMS databases, and has achieved rapid market growth, along with a great deal of market share. On the other hand, two types of files exist in the world of XML file: one is "data-centred files", the other is "file-centred files."The mass XML files emerged in Web belong to the latter type of files, which are characterized as semi-structured and non-structured and could hardly be disposed of by XED. But now, many XML files used in information processing, such as flight information, sales orders, scientific calculations, etc, such data are generally educed by machine, rooting in traditional database, so such files belong to the "data-centred" files, which are very suitable for XED. In addition, NXD has not been verified in daily services, data recovery and other traditional database technology. Consequently, in some applications where data security is strictly required, such as applications in the banking/financial systems, XED has a comparative edge, for its traditional database processing approach.
