Valepp: P2p-based Streaming Media, Publishing And Playback System

Streaming media is a multimedia communication technology that has recently been developed for efficient multimedia transmission through Internet. With this technology the multimedia information can be displayed while it is being downloaded, so that the users do not have to waste their time when downloading, and there will be a radically reduced need in the system memory capacity. The technology can be applied to many Internet information services.In the popular Client/Server architecture, users requested for the streaming media service are all served by the server. As the growth of the users, the bandwidth of the server will be a serious problem. Many previous multicast researches are proposed to handle the problem. They are built on the assumption of IP Multicast. They use single stream to serve many synchronous requested user. But now the deployment ofmulticast faces a serious problem about the absence of IP Multicast. Besides this, IP Multicast protocol is very complex, and the architectures of network are very different. So Application Layer Multicast was proposed to handle the problems.P2P(Peer-to-Peer) Streaming technology put the multicast function from network layer to application layer. Every streaming media user is a node of an ALM. In the traditional architecture, there are not connections among users. But using the technology of P2P streaming, the users can connect the others users based on their network and equipment abilities. The connections among users can release the burden of streaming media server, and can improve the quality of video.Now P2P streaming is divided into two classes: tree based protocol and extensions,gossip-based protocol. Tree based protocol and extensions define the relationship among nodes. But in gossip-based protocol, there is no complex topology relation among nodes.Gossip-based protocol is not complex in contrast to tree based protocol and extensions, and it is very robust. So we use the Gossip-based model in our P2P streaming media distributing and playing system, and do some modifications in the gossip protocol.
