With the development of network technology, the collaborative design process of complex products is often inter-trade, trans-departmental. So, the development environment must be distributed, collaborative and heterogenous. Combined with the distributed artificial intelligence technology, Mobile Agent method integrates the advantage of the other traditional distributed technology and has offered a flexible, efficient and open frame of distributed application and development. Research on Mobile Agent and its application in construction of complex product collaborative design system will improve the process of cooperated design, reduce reiteration in design process and optimize design scheme, so as to improve production efficiency.This paper introduces the characteristics of Agent and Mobile Agent and presents the conception of Multi-Agent systems. Based on the detailed introduction of Agent communication technologies, especially those of Mobile Agent, the improved Agent communication algorithms are presented for the collaborative design system. Two Agent cooperation mechanisms are introduced and the General Partial Global Planning based Agent cooperation mechanism is designed and implemented for task allocation. The architecture of collaborative design system based on Mobile Agents is proposed. The three subsystems, data maintenance, task allocation and collaborative environment, are designed in detail. In the end, the collaborative design system based on Grasshopper Mobile Agents is implemented and the evaluation of the system is presented.
