With the rapid development of communication technology, computer networks are getting more and more important for the special communication networks. At the same time, high transmission rate and multiple services become the trend of the special communication networks'develepment. Broadband Integrated Service Digital Network (B-ISDN), which is based on the Asychronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology, has been widely researched. Many countries and areas take ATM technology as one of the foundational technology, when constructing their information high way. The US army are hoping to set their tactic communication system on the commercial ATM-based WAN. They are trying to use the ATM technology to achieve real-time multimedia communication so that they could widen their global war zone. It is obvious that the ATM technology has been an important goal in the military application and special communication networks. This thesis introduces the application of ATM technology in the special B-ISDN and the ATM protocol architecture. It also briefly describes the ATM User-Network interface protocol Q.2931 and the Network-Network interface protocol PNNI. Based on these knowledge, this thesis does certain research and simulation on the ATM signaling and routing technology.Special B-ISDN has different network characteristics and requirements with the general B-ISDN, so the ATM signaling of the general B-ISDN is not suitable for the special B-ISDN. This thesis researches on the special ATM trunking signaling which is evolved from the Q.2931 and PNNI protocols. It also put detail on the dispatch routing algorithm which is based on the DFS (Deep First Search) flooding algorithm. In order to verify the feasibility of these developed algorithms, simulations are implemented in two large scale network scenarioes. It is the most important research content that in the special B-ISDN, using the special ATM trunking signaling and the dispatch routing algorithm, whether the networks could distribute routing information and provide high-speed services such as voice, vedio and data transimision, etc. Finally, according to the simulation results, this thesis analyze the performance and summarize the the strongpoints and the weekpoints of the developed signaling and routing protocols. I also evaluated the performance of the two scenarios with different network topology. The suggestion for the future development and research is also provided.
