With the support of multimedia data compressive technology and streaming media transfer and control technology, VOD system can provide the service of program on demand on the networks, and implement viewing a program on demand and playing at the customer's will. It is a key technology and also a difficult one to assure the transfer QoS of real time media on the network. This paper mainly researched the streaming media transfer unit, introduced the research and implementation of transfer and control unit in the VOD system which has an embedded set-top box type customer.At first, this paper discussed the main features and basic buildup of streaming media system, and discussed the key function of streaming media technology in the VOD system.Based on the detailed analysis and fitly tailor of the RTP protocol, this paper discussed three parts of the key technology of streaming media transfer. At first, this paper implemented a scheme of RTP encapsulation of bundled MPEG-1stream according to the feature of VOD, and then discussed the method for dynamically monitoring parameters of transfer QoS. At last, to assure the buffer of receivers not to be overflowed at the case of limited RAM for buffering incoming data, this paper put forward a buffer-driven method of dynamically regulating the speed of data transfer.At last, this paper introduced the developed VOD system based on PC platform. The transfer and control unit of this system has an evident effect on improving the QoS of media transfer, and ready to be integrated into the productive VOD system.
