Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), which is made by the convergence of sensor, nested computation, networks and wireless communication technologies, is a novel technology about acquiring and processing information. It can be defined as an autonomous, ad hoc system consisting of a collective of networked sensor nodes designed to intercommunicate via wireless radio. Wireless Sensor Networks had been applied in a lot of scenarios and situations. Both academia and industries have shown great interest in Wireless Sensor Network. There are five chapters in this paper. In the first chapter, the history of WSN, the differences between WSN and traditional networks and the applications of WSN are discussed. At the end of this chapter, the author gave the purpose of this paper and listed the work which will done in this paper. In the second chapter, the author told the differences between the routing protocols of WSN and the traditional routing protocols, then gave the classification of the routing protocols of WSN and the comparisons of several kinds of existing routing protocols. After that, the author abstracted. the characteristics of routing protocols of WSN and gave some factors which must be considerated when designing new routing protocols. In the third chapter, the author did some research on one hierarchical routing protocol: LEACH (Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy). Some improvements of the LEACH protocol algorithm have been proposed. The author made some simulation work to compare the new protocol with the LEACH protocol. The simulation results illustrated that the new protocol outperformed the LEACH protocol. The new protocol has prolonged the network's lifetime. In the fourth chapter, the author did some research on another hierarchical routing protocol: PEGASIS (Power Efficient Gathering in Sensor Information Systems). Some improvements has been proposed in order to make the PEGASIS protocol work better. At the end of this chapter, a new protocol which is the combination of the LEACH protocol and the PEGASIS protocol has been put forward. The simulation results illustrated that this new routing protocol has overcome the drawbacks of the LEACH protocol and the PEGASIS protocol. It is an effective routing protocol which is very fit for large-scale Wireless Sensor Network. In the last chapter, the author concluded the work which has been done in this paper and listed the following work which will be done in the future.
