As the development of modern power technology, the power management IC (Integrated Circuit) has progressed rapidly and found more and more applications in industry. Thus its research has attracted more and more attentions. As is well known that in applications of power management it is usually necessary to deal with the higher voltage and current, which brings the challenge to the design and manufacture of power management IC. Therefore, it is meaningful to study and develop the process applicable to the power management IC and its applications in its design.This thesis analyzed the theory and characteristics of Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) process which is especially fit for the design and manufacture of power management IC. The manufacture of Bipolar,CMOS and DMOS devices in BCD process was discussed. And as examples, some typical IP circuit modules in power management IC based on BCD technology were introduced such as Bandgap reference, OTA (Operational Transconductance Amplifier), analog multiplier, output driver stage, etc. Finally, a whole design of APFC (Active Power Factor Correction) preregulator was given, which is designed and manufactured in BCD process. The design of its system , module circuits and layout was described. The skills and some precautions in the design is discussed in details especially some like the choice and implementations of the different devices as well as its layout design. All these made the chip design be achieved successfully.All work of this thesis is closely combined with the research and development of some power management IC design projects. All of the IP modules mentioned in this thesis have been practically applied to these design projects. With the support of National Semiconductor Company, the APFC chip has been taped out, and its testing results were consistent with the expectations well.The work in thesis is beneficial to the construction and improvement of power management IC design platform based on BCD process. It also made contribution to Chinese power management IP library. The design methodology and technology extracted from the work offered some beneficial experience for the design of power management ICs as well as power modules in SoC.
