As the growth and heterogeneity of networks and Internet, it is quite important and also very difficult to profit information resources efficiently from Internet. Now researchers are trying to utilize mobile agent technology to solve problems in information searching on the Internet.Mobile agent technology is a new kind of technology of distributed computation. It is a combination of distributed technique and agent technique. Mobile agents involves many technology domains, such as computer networks, distributed systems under the Internet environment for its characteristic of moving, autonomy and collaboration, and manifested great application perspectives and advantages. There are few successful applications with mobile agent in the mobile agent research and application fields. The study to agent technology is mostly at the theoretical and mathematical phase and few mature system based mobile agent existed. People still has doubt to safety of the existed immature system. If we can't solve these problems, which will serious hinder the application of mobile agent technology.To solve the problems, it is very necessary to study the agent technology. The main purpose of the thesis is to explore the concrete application of mobile agent technology in Internet environment and study the problems and their solutions when we apply mobile agent technology in software development. After having studied the basic concepts and application characteristics of mobile agent, we analyze in detail the software development method based on mobile agent technology, and then propose a model to design an information retrieving system MABDIRS (Mobile Agent Based Distributed Information Retrieving System) using mobile agent technology. We also study and analyze design and implementation of the system in detail, especially the security and error tolerance mechanisms in the system.
