The library instruction is a traditional service function of the university library. With the advent of the digital age, the network information resources, characterized by its digitalization and network, make library's customers feel perplexed. In addition, the proliferation of various digital information resources leads to uncertainty for library users to acquire the whole and useful information. Therefore, the library users urgently need education to study the skills in the retrieval of digital information, and enhance the level of utilizing information effectively. In this context, the library instruction, as a bridge connecting library and its users, has already shown its importance.The library instruction is a kind of work with different connotation in different times. This thesis has drawn the outline of the university library instruction in the digital age by using a lot of facts at the five levels: the transition of university library; the meaning change of library instruction; the foreign and domestic comprehension of library instruction; the change of library instruction content; and the development history of the university library instruction over the world. Finally, based on these facts and materials, the comprehension of library instruction concept and content in the digital age has been given by the author of this thesis.In the face of the requirements of the digital age, it is prerequisite for university library instruction to aim at the new development situation and establish development direction. Thus, the main content of this thesis is as follows: research and analysis on the working status quo of university library instruction at home and abroad; the comparative analysis on the disparity between two them; to avoid taking the wrong road in practical work by adopting the advanced methods of library instruction in the developed countries. This thesis was finished on the principle of integrating theory with practice. Above all the twenty web stations of domestic university library were investigated through web page survey, and the relevant content of library instructionwas also analyzed. Furthermore, such several aspects regarding the library instruction, as the content, the column design, the manner of feedback and communication between library and its users, the status of content update and etc, were analyzed comprehensively and in detail. Finally, the existent problems of university library instruction at home were put forward.Besides, using the web page survey, the author did research and analysis on the fifteen web stations of American university library, and the results basically resembled the web stations of domestic university library. However, the author discovered that the library instruction of American university displays its own outstanding characteristics, mainly incarnated in the following five aspects: the concision and visualization of column establishment, the comprehensive and particular content, the individuation service convenient for library users, the variety of library instruction programs, the convenience and shortcut of the feedback and communication between library and its customers.Through exploring the thirty web stations of university library around the world, this thesis discovered that the domestic library instruction in the digital environment lagged behind the foreign obviously. There are evident disparities between both sides that chiefly exist in the following five aspects: the conception of library instruction, the manner and method of library instruction, the content of library instruction, personnel competence at work on library instruction, and the development of the effect evaluation of library instruction.Finally, on the basis of analyzing and comparing the disparities between domestic and foreign university library instruction, the author discussed the mode of China's university library instruction in the digital age, in order to provide instructive references for the development of library instruction in the new situation.
